Spend a day working with fibre and creativity. Enjoy a workshop, learn new fibre art techniques, visit other fibre artists and enjoy the many sites and sounds that Salt Spring Island has to offer.

Underwater scene- organic shapes- Learn how to create organic shapes using products such as lutradur, tyvek, silk fibres and water soluble stabilizers. Assemble these shapes into a collage based on an underwater theme, with the addition of embellishments for those final details. Susan Paynter will assist students in the design principals necessary to create a lovely composition.

Susan created the wonderful underwater scene shown at left. She wanted to recreate the feeling of kelp, coral and seaweed. The base fabric is a piece of commercial cotton by McKenna Ryan: 36-73 ocean.  Susan used free motion stitching, texture magic, silk cocoons and silk rods to represent coral and rock formations. Heat distressed lutradur produced a fine, lace looking effect as did  fused shapes made of angelina fibres. Susan rolled painted  tyvek into tube shapes, then applied the  hot tip from a heat tool to fuse the rolls into shape and add textural details. Wire form has been used between layers of fabric to creat the 3 dimensional barnacles.
