Here are some images from a  recent felting class. Students used a selection of wool roving and embellishments on a silk gauze base to create a one of a kind scarf.

A fine silk gauze makes an ideal base for a scarf.  The wool fibres are applied directly on top of the silk into a creative design. Then wet with a soap/water mixture until all the wool is wet.  covered with a layer of netting or tulle, the scarf is rolled around bubble wrap (and an old rattan blind) then  subjected to aggitation to encourage the wool fibres to felt into the silk.

There are some fantastic books on how to needle felt. One of my favorites is Embellish, Stitch, Felt by Shelia Smith.  The author covers how to use a variety of fibres & fabrics including wool, fusibles, lutradur, organza silk & cotton scrim. Excellent photographs and samples demonstrate hand needle felting, the use of an embellisher, and step-by-step instructions.

Rusting Fabric

I have always been intrigued by the idea of rusting fabrics. A warm sunny day seemed the best time to try it. I chose an assortment of silk gauze, cheese cloth, scrim and silk scarves. These were first soaked in a vinegar and salt mixture. In the first image, I wrapped the fabrics around an old paint can, loosely coved it with a garbage bag and left it to sit overnight. This one was on top of a thick card stock which also successfully rusted and created interesting round shapes.  The effects were great, but the vinegar smell remained in the card stock.
