Our images selected for the home page were created by Susan and Elna. Photography for those pieces provided by Gyl. Our thanks to all of them for the use of these lovely pieces of art. What better way to start our blog than with a look at sewing with copper and metal shim?

In this piece, Susan has stitched through copper shim, and couched over recycled sari yarn and various heavy decorative threads. The fine little dots are glass beads have been glued onto the fabric. We show it below enlarged so you can see the lovely detail.

This  is a full view of the copper piece.  The color of the copper shim can be changed by distressing it with heat. Note that she has cut strips of copper and colored metal shim and woven them together.  A stylus has also been used to create surface texture in the metal shim.

Here you can see the stylus has been used on the copper shim. Susan has added free motion stitching  (directly on the fabric and onto a water soluble stabilizer) copper knit as well as some seed beads.
