Jelly Rolls - quilting with theme prints

Jelly Rolly by Kaufman called Eerie Alley
strata sewn with 22 fabric strips
strata sewn with 22 fabric strips
strips from the strata randomly sewn, off set seams

Appropriately named for October, we selected this roll from Robert Kaufman named Eerie Alley.  We used the entire collection for this cute quilt ( 5 of the most obvious themed prints were set aside for the binding)  We wanted to keep the quilt gender neutral, so additional strips of solid Kona Cotton were included into the two stratas we made.  We included lime green, royal blue, orange, bright yellow ,  pink  and lavender solids. Alternatively, you could use 1/2 of the Kona Cotton jelly roll by selecting the brightest valued strips.

Each of our two stratas consist of 22 strips of fabric.  For a slightly larger quilt, a strata of 28 -30 fabrics would be good. After careful pressing, the strata were cut into a variety of strips in the following widths: 2 1/2" , 4" and 7" widths.  These new strips were then randomly sewn together to creat the quilt top. Note that some strips were rotated so that the top fabric was now on the bottom, thus increasing the variety of strips to be stitched back together)  We off set each row, so that the bulk from seam allowances was not an issue. ( see the detail in the  fourth image)

The assembled quilt was stitched with free motion stitching in a stippling pattern.
