Hand dyed scrim
We have developed our own line of hand dyed scrim. These beautiful cotton pieces , dyed on Salt Spring, are all one of a kind pieces. They can be distressed, manipulated, woven, crinkled, scrunched, layered, wet felted, needle felted or torn just to name a few possibilities.
In our two scarf samples, wool roving has been wet felted into the cotton fibres, then hot water has been applied so the wool fibres shrink, gathering the scrim. In the orange sample, we used silky pearl roving which is a white wool mixed with 10% silk and angelina fibres. This gives a lovely shimmer to the felted wool. In the blue/green sample, dyed wool roving has been used to create pleats at the ends of the scarf. We used 2 of the smaller scrim bundles for each of these samples.
The fourth image is a lovely sample created by Joanie. Here she used natural scrim as a base for felted wool roving. Pink silk hankies were used to create the heads of the flowers.
Small scrim bundles are approximately 40" X 54" and the larger bundles approximately 60" X 54" before the dying process. As we continue to work with these lovely fabrics, more images will be posted on this page.
