deColourant
deColourant is a great new product used to remove color from natural fabrics such as cotton, silk, wool or linen. Since it is activated by heat, it can be washed out if you are not satisfied with your design before heat has been applied. Apply deColourant to fabric with a brush, stencil or stamp and allow to air dry. Using a household iron, heat gun or sun, apply heat to activate the deColourant and remove the color from the fabric. Available in 2 forms, the cream works best with stencils, stamps etc. Mask the area where you do not want color removed and lightly use the spray to remove color from areas that are left exposed shen you deisre a subtle effect.
deColourant Plus works the same was the the regular deColourant products but is available in colors. In one step, it removes color from the fabric and addes new color to the fabric.
In our first example, we used a stencil and deColourant to remove some of the color from the brown Kona to create the leaf motifs. Gold deCoulourant Plus was then stenciled on top of the same images, but sightly off set.
The remaining images show our experiments on a piece of hand dyed cotton. Gold and pearl deColourant Plus were applied with a stencil of Asian designs. We then applied regular decolourant with a paint brush. Once dry, heat was applied with an iron, subtly removing color from the fabric. The close up image shows the detail of the resulting effects and our design enhanced with free motion stitching.
