Creating Organic Shapes
This underwater scene was created from a variety of materials assembled into a collage, including lutradur, free motion stitching, texture magic, and silk fibres. We have developed a kit, complete with instructions, for those wanting to learn how to use these products. Below are some excerpts from it.
Our second image shows a piece of texture magic, stitched to bali fabric. Simply place your batik/texture magic piece on an ironing board the texture magic face up. With your iron set on a steam setting, hold the iron approximately 8” above the fabric and apply steam. The fabric will start to pull up during the shrinking process. Once the process is complete the texture magic will lie flat after shrinking up to 30%
Place the clear piece of Avalon Ultra into an embroidery hoop and draw a skeleton coral shape with a sharpy. Stitch along the skeleton shape, ensuring that all stitches are secured to other stitches…approximately 6-8 passes along each line. Remove from the hoop and pin to an old styrofoam plate or meat tray. Wash under running water until most of the stabilizer has been removed. Leave coral pinned to the tray to dry before removing the pins.
Our piece of lutradur , was painted with dye na flow, then distressed with a heat gun. Make sure to work in a well ventilated area or outside. Holding the heat gun approximately 1” above the lutradur, move slowly over the surface of the lutradur as it melts and shrinks. Tear along the weak points into elongated shapes with uneven organic looking edges that resemble undersea plants.
