Creating landscapes
This wonderful landscape was created by Susan. She wanted to re-create the arbutus trees that are so abundant here on the west coast. They are notable for the rich colors, peeling bark and year round green foliage.
The base fabric is a commercial cotton by McKenna Ryan from her Sand in my Shoes collection: 35-73 ocean. A thin layer of misty fuse was then fused on top of the cotton in areas where Susan wanted to enhance the color. Pieces of nylon tulle and nlyon scarves were torn and ripped into small pieces and fused on top of the base fabric. Additional details were then added with free motion stitching. These details can be seen in the second image at left.
Susan prepared a collage of materials to represent the arbutus bark, including heat distressed lutradur, painted fusibles and painted cotton fibres. Glass beads are glued into small groupings to add a little more interest to her design.
The rocks at the bottom of the piece were created from dyed kunin felt. This material can be painted with dye na flow or other similar paint. Lay flat to dry before use. When distressed with a heat gun, it forms a thick lacy material, much heavier in appearance than distressed lutradur. Note: Please make sure you work in a well ventilated area when using a heat gun for any of these materials.
