We have just received a shipment of lovely art quilt patterns.  The finished size of this sailboat pattern is 18" H X 24" W .    We enlarged it by another 25 % with a photocopier to make our sample larger.  This particular  pattern is considered  complex,. because is has a large number of pieces. Patterns come with a full set instructions along with hints for fusing and finishing the quilt. We recommend using  balis or handpainted cotton lawn for these raw edged applique patterns to minimize the fraying of the edges.  Additional details were added  added with Lumiere and Neopaque  paints after the quilt was assembled and stitched.  Our second image shows a close up of the center section of the wallhanging. Note that we added the rigging details with heavy threads in the bobbins and some couched yarns.

We painted both the backgound fabric and the yardage, cotton lawn,  used for the applique pieces with Jacquard's  Dye Na Flow paint.  This is an  water based paint,  easy to use, that does not change the hand of the fabric. Cotton lawn is an excellent fabric for raw edged applique because the high thread count minimizes the fraying of edges.   Our yardaged dried in a couple of hours when left outside in the sun.
