Needle feted desing on commercial wool base: wool roving & silk hankies

There are some fantastic books on how to needle felt. One of my favorites is Embellish, Stitch, Felt by Shelia Smith.  The author covers how to use a variety of fibres & fabrics including wool, fusibles, lutradur, organza silk & cotton scrim. Excellent photographs and samples demonstrate hand needle felting, the use of an embellisher, and step-by-step instructions.
In the first image, Rachel wet fetled a scarf onto silk organza base using wool roving. Then she  needle felted yarn into swirls  for additional details.  The second image is a purse also created by Rachel.  She used a plastic form as a resist to form the opening of the purse, and added details using additional wool roving.

Another felting technique is shown in our third sample.  Knitted with 100% wool yarn and then felted, these make unique Christmas stockings.  The pattern can be found in the book Alterknits Felts by Leigh Radford.  In her book, the authour gives instructions for a variety of knitted and then felted objects including boxes and vessels.

Joanie made this pillow the our fourth image, on a commercially made wool base. She needlefelted a selection of silk hankies and wool roving to create her design.
