3 Dimensional vessels
Working with dissolvable stabilizers( water soluble) can be a little addictive. Bowls and other 3 dimensional objects are built up of layers of thread, yarns and other fibers all stitched onto a water soluble stabilizer base. Once a firm material is formed, the stabilizer is rinsed away and the new material is left to dry over a form. There are numerous stabilizers on the market, but we have a few favorites, depending on what you are making.
All of these samples were stitched on a wash n gone stabliizer base. This works well when not too much thread work is required. For projects that require heavy stitching, we find that Avalon ultra is preferrable.A good book that details this technique for 3 dimensional bowls is Incredible Thread -A-Bowls by Wendy Hill. In the book she demonstrates how to make a variety of shapes using water slouble stabilizers, threads, yarns and fabric.
In the fourth image, the yarns, fibres and threads have been secured to the wash n gone by stitching. The flat piece is then shaped over a bowl or vase, creating darts that are cut and restitched. This is shown in our final image. The stabilizer is washed off, leaving the thread and yarn formation. Cover the bowl or vase with saran wrap and set the wet form ontop and allow to dry. Apply a stiffener or harding agent once dry.
